Abstract

Research in the field of history of health care is one of the relatively highly specialized topics in Slovakia. Practically only the last “pandemic year” has become a kind of research milestone, drawing attention especially to the history of epidemics. Many articles have also been published in Slovakia as well as publications trying to shed light on the development of society in such crisis periods. The article deals with the history of certain epidemics, associated with the territory of contemporary Slovakia until the first half of the 20th century. It describes more significant milestones in epidemic history and points out the reaction and behaviour of society by adopting various measures (practical, legislative). It thus represents a historical introduction to the prepared thematic issue of the Journal Slovak Statistics and Demography, focused on the current pandemic conditions.
