Abstract

The nuptiality of single men and women in Slovakia has undergone several important and rapidly enforcing changes since the early 1990s. The model of early and almost universal marriage has been abandoned. The postponement and the associated decline in marriage rates at a younger age have significantly affected the intensity and timing of this process. In older age, on the other hand, we identify only a limited increase. As these changes have been taking effect for more than three decades, it can be assumed that they have also had a significantly affected the cohort indicators. The aim of the paper is to present an analysis of first marriages in Slovakia in a cohort perspective, to identify the extent of changes due to postponement and recuperation. Thanks to this, we subsequently try to show the possible development of the cohort first marriage rate of men and women in Slovakia born in the second half of the 70s and 80s, who were growing up at the time of the greatest social change.
