Abstract
Standard inferential statistical methods are sometimes inappropriately applied. The paper aims to define the proper application of these methods. Their application requires random samples in which all observations are statistically independent and identically distributed random variables. We will note the possibilities for obtaining random samples with such properties. We will also present cases in which some of these methods can be applied even with more complex sampling designs. Finally, we will define the basic categories of error that lead to the inappropriate application of standard statistical inferential methods. All this may help in deciding on their application in specific situations.
