Abstract
The European Statistics Code of Practice constitutes the core framework for ensuring the quality and credibility of official statistics in the European Union. Since its adoption in 2005, it has played a key role in strengthening the professional independence of statistical authorities, ensuring the quality of statistical processes and enhancing public trust in official statistics. The aim of this paper is to reflect on two decades of development of the Code´s development, analyse its significance for the European Statistical System and highlight the emerging challenges faced by official statistics in the context of digital transformation. Particular attention is given to the experience of the Slovak Republic in implementing the principles of the Code, including the results of international peer review assessments. The paper also reflects discussions from an international event marking the 20th anniversary of the Code, held in 2025 in Brussels.
