Abstract

The intergenerational transmission of ethnicity and the language choice of primary education are two of the several processes through which the change in the size of a given ethnic group can be examined. The theoretical part of this paper provides an overview of the previous approaches, by which individual authors have investigated the intergenerational transmission of Hungarian nationality or the intensity of assimilation within the Hungarian national minority. Based on data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the paper presents several specific results, including the intergenerational transmission of Hungarian nationality, the influence of ethnic background on the intergenerational transmission of Hungarian nationality, and the language choice of primary education for children in families of ethnically homogamous and heterogamous couples with at least one parent of Hungarian nationality.
